How I Take Care of My Pet Dog

Something quite remarkable that happened when I finally sat down with my new puppy for the first time, and it can only be called love. Whether you have been given an adorable little pup as a gift or you have decided to buy one yourself, there’s no denying that dogs are incredible pets. You may be new to the joys of dog ownership and wondering “what do I need to do to take care of my pet dog?” There’s a practical side to being a “pet parent” that you will have to consider, and taking care of a dog, regardless of breed or age, can be time consuming and cost some money. So before you fall in love with a dog and decide to buy or adopt him or her, consider these few simple tips to help you to give your new best friend the very best care you can.

The Basics – Food and Water

No matter what breed of dog you have or are thinking of getting, the most basic and essential necessities are to feed your pet and to provide fresh water. Different breeds and sizes of dogs have different dietary requirements, so you’ll have to check with a good book about your breed of dog to see how much food is necessary. Most dogs are fed twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. The food that you purchase has to be appropriate for the age of your dog. If you have a puppy, and he or she won’t be ready for the protein and other ingredients in food that is meant for older canines. You don’t need to buy the most expensive or fanciest brand of dog food, but you should look in a pet store or online for good quality dog food that isn’t made with ingredients that aren’t part of a dog’s natural diet (such as corn).

You’ll also need to make sure that your pet dog has enough clean fresh water. Dog’s bowls should be cleaned and have fresh water added daily. It’s a good idea to have multiple dog bowls in your home, so your dog always has a drink available.

Crate Training and Puppy Pads

If you decide to adopt a pet, then the house-training process has probably already been completed, but if you are thinking of bringing a new puppy into your house, you’ll need to purchase a few dog training aids, including an appropriately-sized crate and puppy pads. These are essential training tools for your home as they will teach your pet to do their business on them instead of elsewhere in the house. The goal is to eventually be able to take your puppy outside and clean up after him/her outside, but as very young puppies are not able to hold their bladders for very long and you need to have these in place. You can think of these as litter boxes of sorts.

A dog training camp can help to train any breed of dogObedience Training

One of the most important aspects of dog ownership is to ensure that your pet is fully trained in the basic obedience commands. You can attempt the training process at home yourself, but training a dog from scratch involves a lot of time and energy. If you’re having difficulty with getting through the training by yourself, or you don’t have a lot of free time, you have the option of going to an experienced trainer or sending your pet to a dog boot camp. It’s almost always easier and less stressful to work with professionals to ensure that your pet receives good dog training and that any bad habits and behavior problems are corrected.

Exercise and Socialization

All dogs need adequate daily exercise, but some breeds need much more than others. For example, sheepdog breeds such as border collies and Australian cattle dogs are very intelligent and very active dogs, and will need a good amount of physical and mental stimulation on a daily basis to prevent boredom and behavior problems, while other breeds such as great danes and poodles require much less activity. It’s wise to bear this in mind before getting a dog – while you are browsing dogs for sale or looking to adopt a pet, the “energy level” or “required level of exercise” of that animal is usually stated as part of the brief bio.

Also, all young dogs need to be properly socialized with other dogs, other animals and many different people in different locations. This will help them to become comfortable with meeting new people and animals and being introduced to new situations, as well as help to prevent anxiety, fearful or aggressive reactions in later life.

Patience and Love

My pet sheltieAs you bring a new pet into your life, it’s important that you remember to be patient. Of course, you want to ensure that you take care of your pet dog to the best of your abilities, and make sure that your new furry friend has the best chance at a long, happy and fulfilling life. Having a dog can be more work and cost more money than many people realize, but the unconditional love that these wonderful animals provide in so many people’s lives is more than worth it. And yes, dogs do feel love for their human “family”. Dogs do need love and attention just as much as people do. Although a completely different species with completely different ways of communicating and processing information, the human-canine bond is so strong that most people don’t stop to consider how the two very different species manage to live together so well.

Taking care of any size of dog can be a challenge, but can also be one of the most fulfilling aspects of many people’s lives. Dogs serve so many useful functions in our society today – guard dogs, assistance dogs, police dogs, and of course pets. As the majority of households in the US own a pet, it’s no surprise that dogs are one of the most popular. There’s nothing quite like coming home from a hard day at work to being greeted with warmth and love from your pet dog who greets you every time as you as though you’ve been away for years. That alone makes all the hard work and effort worthwhile.
